Five examples of Sex and the City Fanfictions

For Better or Worse

In the movie Sex and the City, the main character Carrie, along with the audience, is devastated when her fiancé leaves her waiting at the altar on her wedding day. In this fanfiction, when Big, Carrie’s love, has a moment of panic and can’t decide whether or not to go in to the wedding, he is able to catch her eye and then knows that he does in fact want to marry her.

This works well as a fanfiction, because in the movie the audience is cheering for the two to get married. Their relationship has been on and off for ten years over the seasons of the television show and the audience has watched their relationship grow. By the two marrying, it is a ‘happy ending’ moment for fans.

Glimpses of Four Girls

This example of fanfiction is somewhat a list of words to remind the fans of loved moments from the entire Sex and the City series. This fanfiction not only covered big storylines but also the smaller scenes that fans often forget about. I loved this fanfiction because it reminded me of small parts that I had forgotten about and made me smile when I remembered them. This fanfiction worked for me because I have watched the whole series however it would not be as enjoyable for others who have only watched some episodes as they would often not understand what the key words are linking to.  

Death, Sex and New York

This fanfiction poses the idea of one of the main characters dying. Samantha had cancer in one of the series and had a rough battle to beat it, but she did. However in this fanfiction she has a relapse and does not survive. I personally did not enjoy this story and do not think it works well because Samantha is such a loved character. The fans read these stories to continue their relationship with the characters outside of the television show, movie or whatever other medium it may be. By having a favourite character killed off, their relationship too is ended. What I did enjoy about this fanfiction was that the author maintained the style in which Carrie narrates throughout the series. 

Big Changes

This fanfiction, like the story above, also is conducive with the narration style used in the Sex and the City episodes. In this fanfiction, the main character Carrie finds out she is pregnant along with Charlotte. Throughout the entire backlog of episodes, Carrie has been against having a baby. Even in the most recent movie, one of the main storylines is that Big and Carrie were never having children; it was to be “me and you, just us two”. Therefore I feel this plot is not believable.

The Big Affair

This final fanfiction that I read was the best out of all of them for me. I found myself using the actual characters voices in my head as I was reading the story, which highlighted how believable it was. The plot is set with Carrie at the hairdressers getting her hair done for her wedding and the Juliette arrives; she is Carrie’s ex boyfriend Aleks’ ex-wife. Nearing the ending of the television series, Carries moves to Paris with Aleks until she decides that she is, in fact, still in love with Big. Aleks played such an important role in Carries life but as soon as she left him, he disappeared completely from the story. To be reminded of him and to see where he is today is a nice storyline and one which I think works well. 

How I feel about my fanfiction now, after reading these five examples

From reading these five examples I am a bit lost on what story I want to tell when I write my fanfiction. On a positive note though, it has shown me what I now know I do not want to use as topics. I definitely do not want to have one of the characters die in my fan fiction, as when I read this in the example 'Death, Sex and New York' I did not find it believable nor enjoyable. I also have learnt that I know I do not want to change from the narrative style used throughout Sex and the City because without this, it just seems like a cheap version of the real thing. 

I think I will bring back a loved character that was not on the screen a lot but made a strong impact on one of the main characters. In order to do this, I need to have a search through the backlog of characters and see what names jump out at me.
